Amazon: a test of success?

Amazon, for those who’ve been living under a rock for the past decade or so, is an online store where one can buy a variety of items. These items include software.

A recent discussion in #ubuntu-offtopic has revealed the following:

Ubuntu 7.04 PC Edition
Amazon.com Sales Rank: #42 in Software

Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate UPGRADE [DVD]
Amazon.com Sales Rank: #65 in Software

(Note: Rank values valid at the time of posting. At this time Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade [DVD] was the highest ranking Vista product.)

Now, that’s pretty damn cool! But wait, there’s more…

While you’re still at the Vista link above, scroll down to the section titled “Tags customers associate with this product”, and laugh. Why? well, I’ll save you the time…

Customer Tags for Vista on Amazon (small version)

(Larger version) Click image to see the full list.

How did this happen? Well, click on the ‘defectivebydesign’ tag and you will find: http://www.amazon.com/tag/defectivebydesign

They, and all the other tag groups, ought to be commended on their good work! :)

Yea not bad. Good reviews too.
    Welcome back.

  2. I really don’t see what’s funny about MS bashing on a public site. I am all for constructive, objective criticism, but that seems much more like an FSF-coordinated campaign, not existing Windows users that express an opinion on a product they’ve bought. I realize any amazon customer can leave tags there so it’s actually embarasing.to me a a free software advocate.

I find the reviews section much more interesting, though.

  3. lol, but we should keep in mind that amazon only represents a small portion of actual buyers, and most amazon shoppers are IT-savvy people.

  4. I cant reply on the site to this guy because I haven’t buyied nothing:

Prejudice, misconceptions about business and Freedom of speach…

Yea, a small portion of buyers, but entertaining to read though. I found most reviews on Amazon, I’m thinking books here, to be quite informative.

  6. Speaking of “defective by design”, i was close to let my browser search for the tag cloud, as i could not find it within that wealth of randomly aranged information. Imagine a real bookstore where all kinds of staff, customers and remotely “related” companies approach you once you grab a book.
phew… i’m glad i can get ubuntu without even virtual harassement :)

  7. It’s fud, the other way around for a change, and makes me feel sick.

  8. Yes, good work of the implicated people and excellent post too!
